My epic bikepacking adventure, with amazing friend Ken Waring, that started November 6th in Sydney, ended today, November 14th, in Omeo due to painful butt sores. Because of my hip replacement July 26th, and one month off the bike while doing a wonderful Gadventures Australia trip with Anneli, I did not have the fitness or butt callouses needed to do my planned daily distances, needed to reunion with Anneli in Melbourne. The initial two days from Sydney, down the beautiful coast, of 155kpd caused butt sores. These got worse each day, especially after Canberra when we started the brutal but beautiful Hunt1000 route (not the 2024 version but from a previous year) with its rough steep tracks and gravel roads over the breathtaking Australian Alps. This slowed my pace and shortened our daily distance. Ken was extremely supportive, patient, and an amazing trip buddy. But today I decided the butt pain was too much to continue cycling, I didn’t want to continue slowing Ken down so much, and Omeo allowed me to catch a bus and then train to Melbourne to meet-up with Anneli as planned.
Ken is continuing on the Hunt1000 route to Melbourne. If Ken continues to have good luck with the weather, he should finish on November 17th or 18th in Melbourne. I plan to meet and celebrate his finishing this epic trip. He has my Garmin Inreach tracking device so his progress and location can be seen on https://share.garmin.com/gregbikingwithoutborders.
My ride statistics:
Sydney to Omeo
841 km travelled = 93 kpd
12,984 m climbed = 1,443 mpd
9 rides/days = per ride/day
Removing 2 short days due to butt sores
789 km travelled = 113 kpd
12,333 m climbed =1,762 mpd
7 rides/days = per ride/day
